Study Abroad | London

Academic credit for the AIFS Abroad London program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS Abroad partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students. The London course syllabi and faculty credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University.

This program is designed for students who wish to take courses in a broad range of academic disciplines many of which relate specifically to the history, art, architecture, culture, economics and politics of Britain and make special use of the resources available in London. Many of these classes also satisfy major or general education requirements. Courses meet for 45 contact hours per semester and carry 3 credits. The minimum course load is four courses and the maximum is five courses for up to 15 semester credits.

Working side by side with locals is an ideal way to gain insight into another culture, to understand different approaches and to prepare for the realities of working in a multicultural and interdependent world. AIFS Abroad has designed the Study + Internship Program to combine a traditional academic learning experience with a unique opportunity to study working life in the U.K. first-hand with placements in London-based organizations. As a global center of finance, fashion, and media, London has some of our best internship placements in nearly every career field. Internships are part-time, individually tailored to students, and we start with getting to know your strengths and your career goals.  

Take 2 courses worth 3 credits each from the regular offering of courses on the Global Education Program in addition to HIST/SOC 335 British Life and Culture (3 credits) and a 3-credit internship in your field of study and earn up to 12 semester credits. All students will be enrolled in INTN 310 International Internship in London which consists of 15 contact hours of seminars and workshops related to their placement and 90-135 hours of supervised unpaid work placement.

The internship provides vital insight into a career field, experience in the global workplace, practical exposure to the demands of specific jobs and development of professional and personal skills. International work experience helps students test a potential career path while exploring interests and abilities in new ways. 

Join a close community of peers to gain insights into the world of academic research in London! Honors Experience students take our 1 credit Honors Inquiry Seminar London, exploring the local research scene through guest lectures and local visits, while discussing insights and methodologies in a supportive learning environment. In addition to the required Honors Inquiry Seminar, students on this track take the required HIST/SOC 335 British Life and Culture course (3 credits) and three or four additional 3-credit courses of their choice. Honors Experience students engage further with the local community by connecting with a relevant institution such as a museum, library or archive in order to develop their area of research. The Honors semester culminates in a research proposal that is presented to professional researchers and peers, and participants receive a certificate from AIFS Abroad upon completion of the program.
