AIFS Abroad Competitive Scholarships 

Competitive scholarships require an application and may include an essay about a particular topic. A specific number of awards are made each term, and the selection process is competitive. Award amounts vary. 

Fall Semester: $5,000/up to 2 awards; $3,000/up to 2 awards
Spring Semester: $5,000/up to 2 awards; $3,000/up to 2 awards
Summer Semester: $1,500/up to 2 awards
 
AIFS Abroad is proud to offer scholarships for academically engaged students seeking to maximize their cultural engagement while abroad.  
 
Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate high academic engagement and/or participate in community service activities. 
 
Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked or sent via email by the following deadline:

AIFS Abroad is committed to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and climate action.  As part of our Green Initiative, we are proud to offer the Green Ambassador Scholarship to participants who share our passion to create a greener future.

Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

AIFS Abroad Green Ambassador scholarship recipients will be expected to collaborate with their on-site staff to plan and execute at least one “green” event during their program.  This event should promote sustainability and climate education and awareness.  Green Ambassadors will also highlight their experience on AIFS Abroad social media, through Instagram takeovers, blog posts, or other forms of content creation

Career Readiness is a core value at AIFS Abroad, and international
internships are a key experience for participant development on their career
paths.

Eligibility: Applicants must submit a competitive application complete with
essay addressing their career goals and how their upcoming internship will
help achieve those goals.

Awarded to deserving American undergraduates to study in the United Kingdom, offered by the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) through a gift from the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation (CTCF). 
 
The scholarship is named after the late Sir Cyril Taylor who spent his life bringing the world together through education and policy as a part of numerous organizations. In 1964, Sir Cyril helped found AIFS, a leading educational organization providing cultural exchange and academic opportunities for more than 1.5 million young people. Born in Yorkshire, England, Sir Cyril was very active in public service and received a number of honors for his work.

Awarded each term in honor of AIFS Founder, Sir Cyril Taylor, AIFS Abroad offers this scholarship to students who demonstrate high academic achievements and articulate their objectives in a required essay. 
 
Eligibility: Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying and have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA. 
 
Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked or sent via email by the following deadline: 
 
Summer: March 1
Fall Semester: April 15
Spring Semester/January Term/Spring Quarter: October 1

This scholarship will be awarded each semester to an AIFS Abroad student with limited financial resources who also demonstrates an interest in and a commitment to social justice. 
 
Mr. Linakis had a great appreciation for travel because he felt it broadened awareness of cultural and economic differences. He cared deeply for people of all walks of life and dreamed of a world where those differences didn’t limit opportunity. Mr. Linakis began his 30-year career at AIFS working in the study abroad division. He later became the head of the AIFS flights department as well as the Senior Vice President of AIFS. 
 
Eligibility: AIFS Abroad student with limited financial resources who also demonstrates an interest in and commitment to social justice.

The Russel Taylor Foundation is committed to providing study abroad scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who have significant financial need.  
 
Eligibility: 3.5 GPA and financial need. (Pell Grant eligible students will be given priority).

AIFS Abroad Limited Grants 

Limited Grants are $1,000 awards. These grants have a fixed funding amount each year, and a select number of participants are awarded each term. Grants are stackable: Participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Limited grants are awarded to participants from our partner universities.

The world is a big place and there is much to see during an experience abroad. This grant supports participants that choose to explore programs in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Australia.

*This is a limited grant, with a fixed amount of awards to distribute each year. A limited number of participants will be awarded these funds.

Eligibility: Applicants must submit a study or intern application to any of the locations listed below, and will automatically qualify.

Applicable to study and intern abroad programs in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Australia.

Fall Semester: $1,000/scholarship 
Spring Semester: $1,000/scholarship 
Summer Semester: $1,000/scholarship 
 

 
We understand that working during an academic program is a great way to gain experience and fund your degree. Participants receiving federal work study grants in their financial aid package are eligible for $1,000 if they upload proof of their award following their application.

*This is a limited grant, with a fixed amount of awards to distribute each year. A limited number of participants will be awarded these funds.

Eligibility: Applicants must upload proof of their financial aid package, including detail of their federal work study offer.

AIFS Abroad Paired Grants 

Paired grants are for eligible participants enrolled at our partner institutions as part of the application process; applicants do not need to complete a separate scholarship application for this funding type. As an applicant, you will know before you apply which grants you are eligible to receive. Grants are stackable: participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Paired grants are awarded to participants from our partner universities.  

AIFS Abroad will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Pell Grant and uses it toward any AIFS Abroad catalog program. 
 
Federal Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree.

AIFS Abroad will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarship and uses it toward an AIFS Abroad semester or academic year catalog program. 
 
AIFS is a Supporting Access Partner of FEA. This means that every academic year since 2017, AIFS has contributed a specific amount of funds to support both scholarship applicants on AIFS Abroad programs, and the daily operations of the organization itself. Together we aim to increase the accessibility of AIFS Abroad study, internship, and customized faculty-led programs for participants with financial need who face barriers to study abroad. We work together on marketing, outreach, and support for applicants and scholars.

AIFS Abroad will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and uses it toward any AIFS catalog program. 
 
This program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, “enables American students to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures” regardless of whether they have the financial means to study abroad. Students who are eligible for a Pell Grant are automatically eligible.

For students eligible to receive GI Bill education benefits, AIFS Abroad will provide a $500 grant for any AIFS catalog program. 

If you studied abroad on an AIFS Abroad program previously, you will receive a $500 grant to study abroad on an AIFS Abroad semester, academic year, summer catalog program, or an AIFS Abroad Internship Program.

Students who have participated on a SEMESTER long Customized Faculty Led program are eligible for a $500 Go Abroad Again grant towards a future AIFS Abroad Semester program or a $300 Go Abroad Again grant towards a future AIFS Abroad Summer program.

Financial Support

AIFS Abroad recognizes the challenges that today’s students face with meeting the cost of their education. We believe that a study abroad and/or intern abroad experience is an essential component of well-rounded education and are committed to providing financial assistance to as many students as possible in support of their goal to study abroad. AIFS Abroad funding, combined with other sources of financial support students can access, will help make international education goals attainable.

Cultural Resources

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled the General Cultural Resources and Site Specific Cultural Resources for you to review. Your program staff will also provide you with more details during pre-departure and orientation.
